Freight Tools & References
Practical tools and reference guides for shippers — freight class, dimensional weight, transit times, and more.
Dimensional Weight Guide
Dimensional (DIM) weight is calculated for LTL and parcel shipments when the package volume exceeds the actual weight. Carriers charge whichever is greater — actual weight or DIM weight.
Formula
DIM Weight = (L × W × H) ÷ DIM Factor
Typical DIM factor: 139 (inches/lbs) or 5,000 (cm/kg). Contact us to confirm which factor applies to your shipment.
Freight Class Reference (NMFC)
Freight class is determined by density, stowability, handling, and liability. Used for LTL pricing. Classes range from 50 (heaviest/cheapest) to 500 (lightest/most expensive).
| Class | Description | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 50 | Dense, durable goods — bricks, flooring, sand | Cement, heavy metal parts |
